The format for the NT Mathematics Competitions for Year 11 and 12 has changed. Students will be asked to complete an assignment, rather than a one hour test.
The procedures and rules are simple.
a) Students are asked to assert that the work presented is their own. Research is encouraged, but solutions must show full working and be signed by the student.
b) Use of calculators or computers is encouraged but may not be necessarily helpful.
c) It is believed the problems presented cannot be solved by Google or other similar techniques, but since part of the determination of winner may involve live presentation of the solution at the Year 11 Enrichment Seminar, students are expected to understand their own solutions fully, to the point of explaining them to others.
d) Complete answers count much more than partial answers. In other words three or four full answers will out score five partial answers.
e) The ultimate prize for Year 11 is nomination to the National Mathematics Summer School in Canberra in January 2010 (all expenses paid). There are also cash prizes for winners of the Year 11 and Year 12 sections in excess of $100 each.
